Cleveland, Ohio, Reglan® and Paxil® Injury Attorneys
It is not uncommon that drugs we trust to treat disorders turn out to have damaging side effects. These side effects can come without warning and can impact the rest of your life or your loved one's life. Recently, two drugs — Reglan® and Paxil® — have come under scrutiny for causing serious side effects.
At Novak, Robenalt & Pavlik, L.L.P., in Cleveland, Ohio, we investigate and bring claims on behalf of individuals with injuries caused by prescription drugs such as Reglan® and Paxil®. Our attorneys take the burden of pursuing a case against large pharmaceutical companies and drug manufacturers off of your shoulders.
Tardive Dyskinesia Caused by Reglan®
On February 26, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Black Box Warning regarding the drug Reglan®. That warning required manufacturers of the drug, which is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, to add a boxed warning to their drug labels about the risk of its long-term or high-dose use. Chronic use of the drug has been linked to tardive dyskinesia, which may include involuntary and repetitive movements of the body even long after use of the drug has been discontinued. Those people at greatest risk include the elderly, especially older women, and people who have been using the drug for a long time.
Reglan® is also known by the name metoclopramide. The drug works by increasing the movement of the stomach muscles, thus increasing the rate at which the stomach empties into the intestines. It is available in a variety of formations, including Reglan® tablets, oral solution and Reglan® injections.
PPHN Caused by Paxil®
On another front, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article that highlighted reports of newborn babies affected by Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). PPHN is a life-threatening condition that affects an infant's blood flow to the lungs.
According to the report, PPHN was found to be six times more prevalent in newborns whose mothers took drugs such as Paxil® after the 20th week of pregnancy when compared with babies whose mothers had not been prescribed antidepressants.
